Why does the number of pages in a magazine need to be a multiple of four?

Magazines are printed on sheets that are twice the size of the magazine when it is unopened. These sheets are attached to each other with staples. The number of pages in a magazine should always be divisible by four, because four pages will be printed on each sheet: one left and one right on the front, and one left and one right on the back.
