Graphic dictionary

During the printing process, we may use words that you have not heard before. We understand that this can sometimes be a bit confusing. That is why we have listed all common graphic terms for you, including a short explanation. Do you want to know more about a specific term? Then click on the link.

  • Binding method

    • The way in which a document is bound (for example wire-O or adhesive binding).

  • Binding spine

    • The spine of the book.

  • Bleed

    • An extra border around the document where the design continues, which can be cut off after printing to make borderless prints.

  • Book block

    • All pages of the book excluding the cover.

  • Borderless

    • Without any white borders around the document/prints.

  • Calibration

    • Comparing print values ​​and actual color values.

  • CMYK - color system

    • A color system used for printing that uses 4 colors: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key (Black).

  • Coated paper

    • Paper type with thin coating for a smooth top layer.

  • Coating

    • A glossy, transparent layer.

  • Compression

    • Reducing the file size.

  • Continuous cover

    • A cover where the spine is printed, as well as the front and back.

  • Contour cutting

    • Cutting in a specific shape, indicated by contour lines.

  • Cover

    • A cover is the, often, sturdy paper covering of a book.

  • Creasing

    • Making a line in the paper where the fold should be.

  • Crop marks

    • Black lines that indicate where the document should be cut.

  • Cutting "clean"

    • Cutting the file to the right size and cutting away white borders.

  • Desktop Publishing

    • Making digital lay-outs for documents meant for publication.

  • Die - cut

    • Completely cutting the sticker or plates, including the backing.

  • DPI

    • Dots Per inch; indicates the resolution of a file.

  • Dropbox

    • An online service for saving and sharing documents.

  • Environmental labels

    • Labels that indicate that a product is produced in a sustainable, less environmentally harmful way.

  • Finishing

    • All the actions we can take to produce your desired end product.

  • Flattening

    • Convert transparent objects to a different format.

  • Folded size

    • The size after the product has been folded.

  • Fold line

    • A dented line in the paper that indicates where the paper should be folded.

  • Fonts

    • A description of the lettertype: the style, size, etc.

  • FSC logo/paper

    • Material sourced from responsibly managed forests.

  • Grammage

    • The weight of paper per square meter.

  • Impose / imposition

    • Arranging pages and print work for the printing process starts.

  • Inkjet

    • Printing technology that uses small droplets of liquid ink.

  • Kiss - cut

    • Contour cutting of a sticker while the backing remains intact.

  • Lamination

    • A transparent, matt foil that is applied to the paper.

  • Lay-out

    • The design of the document; how text and images are arranged on the page.

  • Safety margin

    • A 5mm margin to guarantee that all important information is maintained during printing and cutting.

  • Samples

    • Examples of our paper types, envelopes and board materials.

  • Page

    • One side of a sheet of paper.

  • Paper type

    • A variation in thickness, whiteness and texture.

  • Paperwise

    • Paper made from agricultural waste.

  • PDF

    • One of the most common file formats.

  • Plano

    • A sheet of unfolded paper, usually printed on one side, without any finishing such as cutting.

  • Plotter

    • Large format printer.

  • Pixels

    • Small, colored dots that make up a digital image.

  • Punching

    • Making holes in the paper.

  • Separator sheet

    • A sheet of paper used to separate different sets or parts of a document.

  • Softcover

    • Cover made of sturdy paper.

  • Spread

    • Two pages that flow into each other and are viewed at the same time.

  • Vector

    • A file made up of lines instead of pixels.

  • WeTransfer

    • A website for uploading and downloading files up to 2 GB.

  • White edges

    • Small white edges around a document, due to wrong uploading or ordering of a document.
